Some people dream of beachfront homes.
Apparently, I dream of being locked inside a bank vault with a glass of bourbon.
That realization came while sitting inside the former vault of West Chester’s historic First National Bank Building, sipping an Old Fashioned and wondering if anyone would notice if I simply stayed forever.
My kind of heaven.
A Historic Landmark in the Heart of West Chester
Located in the heart of downtown West Chester, 9Prime and Johnny O’s Speakeasy occupy one of the borough’s most fascinating historic buildings. Established in 1864, the First National Bank Building has witnessed more than 160 years of Chester County history. Today, it serves as a gateway between the area’s storied past and its thriving present, preserving many of the architectural details that made it a local landmark while creating an entirely new experience for visitors.
And if you’ve never spent time in West Chester, you’re missing out.
As the county seat of Chester County, West Chester is filled with beautifully preserved architecture, independent shops, locally owned restaurants, and walkable streets that practically beg you to spend an afternoon exploring. It’s one of those downtowns where history doesn’t feel trapped behind museum glass. Instead, it’s woven into the businesses, buildings, and experiences that continue to bring people together.

First Impressions at 9Prime
The experience begins upstairs at 9Prime.
Walking through the entrance, you’re immediately greeted by soaring ceilings, dramatic chandeliers, elegant architectural details, and a grand lobby bar that feels equal parts sophisticated and welcoming. The black-and-white color palette creates a timeless aesthetic that elevates the experience without feeling overly formal.
Venture deeper into the restaurant and the atmosphere becomes warmer and more inviting. Rich finishes, comfortable seating, and thoughtfully restored details encourage guests to settle in and stay awhile.
History remains woven throughout the space.
One of the most fascinating features can be found within the restaurant itself, where original safety deposit boxes from the building’s banking days still line portions of the walls. Rather than removing these reminders of the past, the restoration embraces them, allowing guests to dine among pieces of local history.

The property also offers private dining, banquet, and meeting spaces, making it an impressive venue for everything from corporate gatherings and networking events to weddings, celebrations, and special occasions.
Descending into Johnny O’s Speakeasy
As beautiful as 9Prime is, however, there’s another reason many visitors find themselves lingering a little longer.
Downstairs.
Accessible through the restaurant, Johnny O’s Speakeasy occupies the lower level of the former bank, tucked away beneath the bustle of High Street.
The transition feels intentional.
Upstairs feels grand.
Downstairs feels comfortable.
The lighting softens. The pace slows. The atmosphere becomes intimate and inviting. Rather than trying to recreate a Prohibition-era speakeasy with gimmicks and costumes, Johnny O’s allows the building’s history to speak for itself.
And whatever you do, don’t forget to look up.

While most guests are naturally drawn to the historic architecture and vault spaces, artwork stretches across portions of the ceiling, rewarding those who take a moment to explore beyond eye level.
A Vault Worth Staying In
My friend and I were fortunate enough to spend the evening inside the original vault itself. What began as a quick visit turned into one of those experiences where neither of us felt particularly motivated to leave. On a Friday night, no less.
There was no rush.
No shouting over music.
No fighting for space at the bar.
Just good conversation, good drinks, and a room that somehow makes time slow down.
More Than Just Cocktails
One of the biggest surprises was the food.
Many speakeasies excel at cocktails but offer little more than a few snacks or appetizers. Johnny O’s offers access to the full 9Prime menu, which means you don’t have to choose between a memorable dining experience and a memorable cocktail experience.
You get both.

My friend and I opted for several lighter dishes and shared everything. The Brussels sprouts delivered plenty of flavor and texture, while the calamari disappeared quickly from the table. A pressed panini rounded out the meal without requiring the kind of commitment that sends you searching for a nap afterward.
Bourbon, Beer, and a Little History
Of course, a visit to a speakeasy requires cocktails.
I sampled the Classic Old Fashioned featuring Chicken Cock Bourbon, which immediately sparked a conversation about how “cock” was apparently a more common term for a rooster when the brand was founded. History lesson and bourbon? Count me in.
I also tried the Tequila Old Fashioned, a surprisingly smooth twist on the classic cocktail that managed to feel both familiar and entirely its own.
I brought along a friend whose appreciation for beer borders on professional expertise, and even she felt right at home with the beverage offerings.
For those looking to make Johnny O’s a regular stop, membership options are available and include perks such as priority reservations, exclusive events, member gatherings, and other benefits throughout the venue.
My Kind of Heaven
By the end of the evening, I found myself wondering if there was a residency program for people who want to live permanently inside historic bank vaults.
Add a comfortable chair, a glass of bourbon, access to the 9Prime menu, and a quiet place to hide from the world for a few hours, and I may never leave.
If you’re planning a visit to West Chester, make time for both 9Prime and Johnny O’s Speakeasy. Come for the history, stay for the atmosphere, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself lingering a little longer than expected.
After all, who knew being locked inside a vault could feel so relaxing?
